Artifact 5- Thank Sex for Making the Internet Hot
This podcast was very interesting to me. I know that porn is a popular thing on the web and we discussed in class the other day that 1 in 3 people look at porn online, but it was very interesting to see how much it really is impacting the Internet. I thought with all the other things the Internet is capable of doing that porn wouldn't be such a major part of the Internet. They make a large amount of money from Internet porn because people spend so much time using it and in some cases they have to sign up and subscribe to it. It said in the podcast that a few years ago porn was getting the most hits on the Internet but today social networks are getting the most hits. I'm sure that porn is still at the top next to social networks. I believe a lot of individuals turn to porn for pleasure and companionship.. or just for fun when they are bored. There are so many different ways you can access porn online and they have taking it to a whole new level lately. With pictures, videos, chatrooms, etc. The podcast talks about how a lot of the things we use today on social networks or just any ways of Internet communication evolved from online porn like watching clips or live videos and webchats. I would have never thought that porn was the thing that really started it all. It is interesting to see how much Internet porn has affected the Internet and other things we do while we are on the computer.

I felt very similar to you in multiple ways. I thought that the podcast was very shocking and I couldn't really believe how much people really did watch porn on the Internet. After watching the podcast it made me really think about the porn industry and it did make me realize that there was a lot of money to be made in this industry. With so many people that subscribe and pay money to watch porn there is a lot of money out there. I also couldn't believe how many things came out of just the porn industry. For example, social networking like Facebook and chat rooms all came out of just porn. I would have never thought that was the case in a million years.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that it was interesting to see how much porn has impacted the internet. Before Facebook became popular to our generation, we used to use AIM (Aol Instant Messaging) to chat. A few times my friends would all be on at the same time and we would be in a chat room. Looking back, I would never have imagined that people use those kind of things for porn. If I watch a video on YouTube, I never think that media players were first used to satisfy people using porn. If I buy a movie off of iTunes, such as Made of Honor which is my most recent purchase, I watch it using Windows Media Player. The most shocking part of all to me was, like you mentioned, it said in the pod cast that a few years ago porn was getting the most hits on the Internet but today social networks are getting the most views. Porn has been accessed through many websites these days that sometimes you need to be a member to see. They are making money off of porn. This is where online shopping begins to come into play because people are comfortable spending money via credit card online. My question is, where do porn websites stand today? Obviously they are not at the top because social networking sites are, but I am sure they are still very common. Overall, I agree with you because of how shocking this pod cast was. I would have never thought that porn websites were the start of the internet.
