Artifact 10
One idea I have for the focus of my fourth essay is internet addiction. For this artifact I read the article “Miss G: A Case of Internet Addiction”.
In this article by Virginia Heffernan, she begins to talk about an online addiction test created by Dr. Young, a professor at Bonaventure University in 1998. Dr. Young says that the internet is addictive because it allows a person to create new personalities and helps individuals fulfill psychological needs. Dr. Young’s test will suggest that any real-life task should be more important and more fulfilling than online interactions or social life. A question from her internet addiction test is “Do you neglect household chores to use the internet?” This could be a warning sign if you are spending more time on the internet or thinking about the internet then taking care of your real responsibilities. In the article, they later discuss how some things a person is considered “passionate” about but with the internet it is considered to be addiction. A person can be obsessed with poetry and art which is just being passionate about it. The word passionate is like addiction in the sense that you are really involved with something and spend a lot of time thinking about it or taking part in it, but passion is healthier than addiction. Being passionate is showing your emotions for something in a way that isn’t considered unhealthy or an illness like internet addiction. The article also touches on the issue that the internet makes females vulnerable to predators.
Internet addiction is a growing issue. The article discusses the 20-year-old college student, Gabriela, who is an internet addict. She sleeps with her laptop and stays up to all hours of the night because she is surfing the web. Everything she views on the internet she connects with other things she must research just to get basic information about and that will lead to more discoveries for her. It is all interconnected. Gabriela refrains from using the internet on her Sabbath day, but during this day she is constantly talking or thinking about the internet. It seems the internet has benefitted Gabriela in a way that some might find unusually. She is gaining knowledge all the time and happy with her life just the way it is. Her “addiction” of the internet hasn’t reacted against her just yet; it is still at a somewhat normal level. This article mentions the idea that we have seen many times throughout this class, the idea that “fantasy life and real life should, ideally, be brought into balance”.
I believe that internet addiction is a growing problem for many individuals all around the world. In some cases, like Gabriela, the addiction is handled in a way that one can carry on their normal responsibilities and be productive, even if the internet is always on their mind. It will be very interesting to see more cases of internet addiction as I continue my research for this essay. I would think that most people today have a little bit of internet addiction in them because of all the distractions the internet has offered us. We get on the computer as soon as we walk into our rooms and check our Facebook accounts, then we download music, look at Textsfromlastnight.com, creep on Facebook some more, and finally we start our homework. The distractions of the internet are the main reason people get addicted. There is so much to know, so much to look up, so much to see.

Artifact 9: The Spirit of Sharing
After reading this article I realized how important online activities are for businesses, organizations, companies, and in this case, it is very important for the museums. I guess I never realized how important Facebook and other social media networks are for those things. It promotes what they want promoted and brings the faces to their doors. I just have always thought of Facebook being about socializing with friends or stalking people’s pictures and lives. This can really be beneficial to the companies and museums and I am sure that more and more people will want to get involved with posting their products or advertising on the social media networks. For example, on Facebook you can be a ‘fan’ of something like the St. Louis Cardinals or Taco Bell (two I know I am a fan of on Facebook), and you can know facts about these things right on the homepage or it can tell you which of your friends are fans too. And as for Twitter, you can follow different organizations to get information, facts, deals, discounts, etc. All these things can bring potential customers and new faces into their stores or museums. If their motives are to get people through their doors and online web sites and social media networks are helping, then they should keep working to improve their sites and bring the people out to the museum.
The first impression I had when reading this article was that these online sites and social media networks would just keep people out of the museums seeing as they could get all the information they need right online with just the click of a button. People may be fans of the online things the museum is offering but that may result in lower turn-outs in the actually museum. Today everyone is about being ‘virtual’ and all the things the internet can offer and I think the museum is kind of an escape from today’s world. I’m not sure how I feel about all the activities online, but if it is helping them bring more people through their doors, then more power to them. I do think that having people use and interact with their handheld devices while at the museum could really distract them from the actual art and disrupt the beauty of being at the museum itself. I do believe that having wireless internet throughout the museums is a pro because many people have art classes or blogs about art and being able to participate in those things while at the museum could really help their projects and work about the art. Like we all know, everyone gets distracted from their work or from reality because of all the new technologies like Facebook, Twitter, texting, etc., so this could also be negative. They need to be able to stay on task while experiencing the art.
People will do whatever they need to in order to get potential customers in front of them. The web has created many possibilities for this. More companies and businesses will be putting their name on the internet and social media networks to try and get ahead of the game. It has been working for many people and will continue to grow as the internet gets more advanced and even more popular than it is today. The ‘sharing’ between the online community and the actual community might just be what every company or organization is in need of.

Summary- Strand 3:Task 5 and Task 6
Task 5- Building Community: Metaworlds and Visual Chat
The task asks us to experience metaworlds and visual chat online. The main objectives of this task is to: 1) Paticipate in a virtual reality environment for at least a week; 2) Critique the graphic representation of individuals and community spaces; 3) Make fieldnotes responding to key questions and recording your impressions; 4) Apply what you know about online relationships and community building.
CMC is being impacted by the increasing use of multimodel technologies and the best representation of this is in Virtual Reality Environments, also known as, VREs. VREs combine the fantasy dimensions of traditional text-based genres of MUDs with the widely popular activity of text-based chat. These are known as metaworlds and visual chats. The first metaworld was Habitat and it was created in 1985. The idea behind this task is that we experience and discover what it is like to join and participate in one of the graphical communities. Our textbook says that they are fun and we would enjoy them if we have never done anything like that before. The participation in these metaworlds are interesting and entertaining.
As for the task, first, we need to sign up on a metaworld such as Active Worlds, worlds.com or vZones which our textbook recommends. vZones allows you to become a digital person. The first thing you need to do after you sign up is change the appearance of your avatar; they give all the new comers a basic body style. You can create your own avatar designing its' body type, size, clothing, hair, accessories and more. You meet people, chat and interact with people from all over the world, walk around, play games. You can control your gestures and body movements. Anything you type in the computer you can enter it into your world and it will show above your avatar's head in a speech bubble. There are different zones you can interact in and thats how you can begin to socialize with other people. When you join you start out with 50 tokens and you use the tokens to buy clothes, accessories, gifts for others, things for your apartment and everything else. You have to get more tokens as you go on. The text recommends that you meet people to show you around the virtual world. There is a monthly fee but getting used to these virtual reality chat spaces is easy and fun to use. They show what it is like to be in an online community. The text asks a good question, "How do you think the graphical (or visual) environment of vZones impacts on how people feel and behave towards each other?"
Task 6- Constructing Identity: Personal Homepages and Webcams
This task asks us to discover personal homepages and webcams. The main objectives of this task are: 1) Conduct an analysis of personal homepages for online identity construction; 2) Consider how the marginalized can develop identity and community online; 3) Make fieldnotes responding to key questions and recording your analyses; 4) Apply what you've learned from Central Issues: Unit 2.
Charles Cheung talks about the opportunity that personal homepages give for the reflexive presentation and narrativization of the Self. Others say that homepages are like bedrooms with posters and pictures overflowing them or like a mantelpiece filled with postcards and knick-knacks. Homepages mix private and public boundaries in an interesting way which is different from the past in communication technologies. Webpages are both mas communication and interpersonal communication. People that create homepages are interacting with their audience even if it isn't immediate. Homepages give a chance to show the hidden aspects in our lives and give people the opportunity to validate themselves.
As for the task, we need to look at different homepages, personal and professional and also view
homepages of marginalized people online. Another thing the task asks us to view is webcams. A good way to observe homepages and decipher them is by using Daniel Chandler's "Bricoleur's Web Kit" which provides a number of criteria for analyzing homepages. Some of the things you need to look at in the homepages are the types of activity which consist of inclusion, allusion, omission, adaptation, and arrangement. Another thing to look at is the types of content which consist of personal stats, interests, ideas, values, friends and personal icons. The last thing to look at is the types of structure which consist of written text, graphics, video clips, an access counter, guestbook, 'cool links' section, and email or chat button. When then have to look at the differences between professional and personal homepages. Observe balance between their public and private lives. When you look at personal homepages, you can type in any random first name go through the search. There will be hundreds of people with the same name but they will all have different homepages containing completely different things. You can also observe teh marginalized people online. Look how they are using personal homepages to communicate, assert, and construct their social identity. You can search different groups and cultures to see how they are interacting online. There was a special case study done on gay people in cyberspace. The internet has been a potential opportunity for gay people. The internet offers a safe environment for a gay individual. They can be open without feeling marginalized or discriminated. This shows them that they are not the only one. The text also asks us to take a look at webcams. They have been a growing part of CMC. Webcams have become more popular with young women. You can search Webcam World and find top-100 webcam sites.

Artifact 8: Health Online
Watching this video on health online just shows how much people are using the internet and technology today. Having those apps for on a cell phone like Web MD is very helpful. I know a lot of my friends rely on Web MD when they are feeling sick or have anything wrong with them. It is very beneficial to have those type of things available to us; it is a lot more convenient than going to the doctor for every little issue a person encounters. I also thought that the website patientslikeme.com is very neat. That is cool that they make created that so children or anyone can interact with others that are going through the same thing. I know if I was going through that I wouldn't want to just talk to my friends or family members about that because they aren't experiencing that. It gives kids the courage to talk to people about that and shows them they are not alone. The video game that they made is also very interesting. Although I have never gone through any kind of situation like that, I can only imagine how overwhelming it would be to have cancer and go in to the doctors office as a child and have them try to explain what is wrong or what procedures they are going to do. All of these new apps and technologies for health online are very beneficial to children experiencing that. This can make going through cancer a lot easier for children.

Artifact 6- I Am Anonymous
Watching this video kind of made me confused about what the website 4 Chan actually is but as the video went on I started to understand it more and more. I had never heard of this website and the only thing I can really relate it to is Wikipedia. People can go on there and edit or create pages about everything someone would research. I guess 4 Chan is different from this because people post anything and everything they want without fear because everything you do on the site is anonymous. I think this is a good idea to get people to express their feelings or ideas they have, but I am not sure of what good it really does because no one knows who said it or why. I can see is that it is good for self satisfaction and entertainment but there is no credibility. It does seem kind of interesting and fun to look around on or try out sometime. I think it wouldn't always be a good thing because like Chris said, people put up anything they want and a lot of the time the content is inappropriate. I do believe that most people overlook that kind of website because we are so wrapped up in social networks. We want to see people's faces, what they are doing, what they have said, ect. In return, we want people to see our face, what we have commented on certain things, and in some cases we want people to know what we are doing and who we are. With 4 Chan you cannot get the same thing because it is all anonymous. So yes, I do believe that 4 Chan has its ups and downs but I know more people would be interested in using social networks and other similar sites because they do not want to be anonymous.

Artifact 7 Cheaters Beware!
It was interesting to me to read that cheating amongst students was about 20 percent in the 90s, then raised to about 50 percent in 2002, and has since then dropped about 10 percent. The article was from 2008 so since then it could have changed some as well. I was surprised at this because I thought, at least from high school, that students were still cheating just as much or even more. I have never seen anyone cheat the ways they explained in the article aside from having the notes on their cell phones. Yeah I know that there are papers available and numerous other ways to cheat but I just really have never personally experienced anyone cheating in those ways. I did experience a very embarrassing situation about cheating first hand. My freshmen year of high school I was in my basic art class and we had to take a quiz on a movie we had watched and of course I was really paying attention to the movie. When it came time to take the quiz, I looked off the guys sitting next to me for a few answers. One happened to be about how big the shoes were that the video talked about... he took a random, stupid guess and said 15 feet. I didn't read the question and sure enough, I wrote down 15 feet. Then my teacher went on later to say "Connor, 15 feet for a pair of shoes?! Really?!"
Also, I found it interesting that professors spend so much effort trying to catch plagiarism. I know that that is an important issue that should be enforced, but just with all the students a professor has and all the work to be graded, it just doesn't seem like they would spend that much time on it. I did hear about turnitin.com in my senior year english class. It seems like some of the anticheating technology that schools are using or requiring are a little too overboard. Like the 360 degree webcam for an online class. Like seriously, thats almost invading a person's privacy. I think that the testing centers are more appropriate and realistic. Some of the cheat-proof ideas from the article are very good but some I think are taking it a little too far.

Artifact 5- Thank Sex for Making the Internet Hot
This podcast was very interesting to me. I know that porn is a popular thing on the web and we discussed in class the other day that 1 in 3 people look at porn online, but it was very interesting to see how much it really is impacting the Internet. I thought with all the other things the Internet is capable of doing that porn wouldn't be such a major part of the Internet. They make a large amount of money from Internet porn because people spend so much time using it and in some cases they have to sign up and subscribe to it. It said in the podcast that a few years ago porn was getting the most hits on the Internet but today social networks are getting the most hits. I'm sure that porn is still at the top next to social networks. I believe a lot of individuals turn to porn for pleasure and companionship.. or just for fun when they are bored. There are so many different ways you can access porn online and they have taking it to a whole new level lately. With pictures, videos, chatrooms, etc. The podcast talks about how a lot of the things we use today on social networks or just any ways of Internet communication evolved from online porn like watching clips or live videos and webchats. I would have never thought that porn was the thing that really started it all. It is interesting to see how much Internet porn has affected the Internet and other things we do while we are on the computer.

Artifact 4
I found the first video to be very interesting. At the same time, it was kind of creepy. The girl was so life-like with the eyes, skin, hair, teeth and mouth. It is scary to see how much like humans they are. It was also just weird to see that around the world people are making these Droids. In the video they were going through somewhat of a test run on the Droid. What will these Droids being doing for us? Are they also going to take away actual communication between real people? Will there be Droids conducting business meetings or teaching classes? Will they be working assembly lines in factories? Just seeing that short of a video clip on the Droids really makes you wonder all of the possibilities. Will they soon be all around our world? This may be the future we will see or our children will see.
The second video was also interesting to me. It should the manual pencil sharpener and the title was asking if this was old fashioned or not. I believe in some ways this is old fashioned but in other ways it is not. People use pencils every day so therefore they need a way to sharpen them. Sometimes using this kind of sharpener is easier because they are small and silent opposed to the electronic sharpeners. In the aspect of the pencil sharpener being old fashioned, there have been newer inventions for pencil sharpeners, like I mentioned the electronic sharpener earlier. These sharpeners are a one-step process compared to the two-step sharpener in the video. I think many individuals want the easiest way to do things and would prefer the one-step sharpener over this one. Maybe in the future this will become very outdated like a record player or 8 track player, but for now, I do not think that these are old fashioned.

In this interview with Nicholas Carr, he discusses his new book called "What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains". He begins his discussion talking about how he has been interested and involved in the technologies of the computer and the internet practically since they came out. He goes on to talk about how he has sort of become attached to them and that when he tries to do other tasks like read a book, he feels distracted and that he needs to check his e-mail or click on links that only the web provides. I agree with him that the internet has been a distraction when trying to accomplish other tasks. If I am working on a paper or doing homework for a class, I usually tend to get on Facebook or look around on YouTube. He later goes on to talk discuss the factor of multi-tasking. All of the new technologies and the net have allowed us to do so many things at a time. He says how being distracted and doing more than one thing at a time, this is harder for us to process new things to our short term and long term memory. This is very interesting to me because I am the type of person that cannot read and listen to music at the same time. If I do try to do that, the reading does not stick with me. The more you are interacting with at a time, the less you are able to retain and understand later when you try to go back to it. This is very true, at least for me. I know it is a struggle for young adults and even any adults in general to stay focused on one thing at a time with all the different technologies we have at our fingertips. We are attached to these things and they are the reason for distractions in relationships, school work, business tasks, and many other tasks and work. This author relates to the author of "Hamlet's Blackberry" in the sense that these technologies are distractions and they force us to be disconnected from what is really going on in our lives. Nicholas Carr talks about how because of the internet and computers that our reading and writing has changed. I don't necessarily agree with this. I still write the same quality of papers I would if I didn't have these technologies, I'm actually probably writing better because of all the resources and technologies. However, even as I am working on this, I am getting distracted by my cell phone buzzing with text messages. I would say maybe reading has changed just because of all the distractions, but for classes we read what we need to.. for the most part. Overall, I agree with Carr because all of the technology we have today are all distractions in some way. Wether it be e-mail, text messaging, Facebook, etc. As technology advances, I believe only more and more distractions will arise and the more disconnected we will all be from the world around us.

Artifact 2
I found this video very interesting. In the beginning of his interview, he mentioned that when he went through this park, mostly everyone was using some sort of gadget. This is so true today. Everyone is always using their different kinds of gadgets.. or multiple gadgets at a time. You can be on your iPod listening to music while you're texting your friend about your weekend. Then he goes on to say how paper has been around for over 2,000 years, and paper is still becoming more valuable and that he thinks paper is eternal, it won't ever go away. That was very interesting to me. I do think that paper is very valuable to our society but I think we are seeing less and less of it today. In my English class my senior year of high school, we were submitting all our papers online; it was a paperless class. This is the same with the class we are in now, we turn everything in via email.
The author was inspired by Thoreau, Emerson, and James and he relates it to his novel in the way those authors have discussed the challenges we face when we are adapting to new technology. He goes on to say how this is what we are facing today. This relates with our past artifact when we look at the fact that the younger generations are adjusting to the technologies better then the older ones. We have to keep up with everything new that is happening and at sometimes it is overwhelming. It was interesting when he talked about the important new gadget people used in the time of Shakespear. These gadgets were called 'Tables' and they were used the way we use notebooks. He says how people were very dependent on their tables, just how we are all dependent on your cell phones, iPods, laptops, etc.
He later talks about the last part of his book and how you need balance in your life between all the new technologies and just a normal lifestyle. I believe that a lot of families are suffering like his family was because of how everyone has become so attached to screens. I know this is true with my family, mainly just between my brothers and me. If I'm at home my dad will yell at me if I'm texting in front of him and say things like "try to be in one place at a time", and of course it is a big No-No in my house if someone is texting while we are eating dinner. When I do come home, I get mad when my brothers are spending more time playing X-Box Live then watching T.V or hanging out with the rest of the family. Like everyone else, they are addicted to their screens as I am to my phone. I do agree with the author and think that these things do put a damper to family time and relationships, which I try very hard to improve when I'm at home.
Artifact 1
More and more people today are turning to the internet or web as alternatives to getting their news, communicating, shopping, and even banking. The article I read for Artifact 1, Internet Surpasses Television as Main News Source for Young Adults, shows us how much the internet is growing among young adults and even becoming vastly more popular for individuals of all ages. The internet has become user friendly for all ages.
More people are relying on the internet to get their news then getting the information from the T.V. I was surprised that this has changed so much even in the last couple years. I found the different statistics to be very interesting. I know my parents don't get the news from the internet, hell; my mom won't even get on the computer unless she is at work. I on the other hand, do not watch T.V; therefore I do get my news from either the internet or from my peers. As it relates to the article, it has always been obvious that the younger generations are using the internet as the main source for a lot of things. However, we see a lot more adults and elders using the internet for their news source. Like stated in the article, the internet has Internet-T.V connection devices for news and regular T.V. The internet gives us fast results from many different sites and viewpoints. We can find exactly what we want to find within the news on the internet and that is why I believe more people are getting on their computers instead of turning on the 'Boob-Tube'.
