More and more people today are turning to the internet or web as alternatives to getting their news, communicating, shopping, and even banking. The article I read for Artifact 1, Internet Surpasses Television as Main News Source for Young Adults, shows us how much the internet is growing among young adults and even becoming vastly more popular for individuals of all ages. The internet has become user friendly for all ages.
More people are relying on the internet to get their news then getting the information from the T.V. I was surprised that this has changed so much even in the last couple years. I found the different statistics to be very interesting. I know my parents don't get the news from the internet, hell; my mom won't even get on the computer unless she is at work. I on the other hand, do not watch T.V; therefore I do get my news from either the internet or from my peers. As it relates to the article, it has always been obvious that the younger generations are using the internet as the main source for a lot of things. However, we see a lot more adults and elders using the internet for their news source. Like stated in the article, the internet has Internet-T.V connection devices for news and regular T.V. The internet gives us fast results from many different sites and viewpoints. We can find exactly what we want to find within the news on the internet and that is why I believe more people are getting on their computers instead of turning on the 'Boob-Tube'.
There definitely is a gap with internet use among newer generations and older generations. Not to say that no one over fifty can use the internet, but it is common to see older generations turning to the television or the newspaper for their news, which puts it in perspective how many teens are turning off the television and turning on the computer. Like my mom, the only reason she gets on the computer is for work and online shopping. She is technology challenged. Eventually, I believe that televisions will not be in home anymore and computers will be in every room of a house. Televisions will become retro as humans enter into a stage where computers are their main source of news and entertainment.
ReplyDeleteMy mom just turned 40 in January and my dad turned 41 in November, so sometimes they use both TV and internet for their information. Their generation seems to get stuck in the middle because they are not completely oblivious to the internet. They mainly use what is more convenient. If my mom is at work, she will look the weather up online just to see what is coming for the week. If she is at home upstairs (our computer is downstairs) she will turn on the TV to see what the forecast for the week is. My dad is less familiar with the internet. He is a carpenter so at his job, there are no computers. The only time he accesses computers is when he is at home. I also have an 11 year old brother that is a computer genius. When I was 11, I wasn’t on the computer, or facebook. My whole family is, from my 11 year old brother to my 87 year old grandma. Just because people don’t use the internet as their primary news source, doesn’t mean they aren’t on facebook. I just don’t understand why? Why does my grandma know how to get to the facebook home page, yet my mom has to show her everyday how to get to her bank website to check her account? Why do children in middle school get on facebook just as often, if not more, than students in high school or college? I predict the internet will be used as the primary news source for everyone in the near future.
